{"id":14272,"date":"2020-07-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/perspectives\/remedying-our-planets-greatest-risks-6\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T12:51:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T12:51:17","slug":"remedying-our-planets-greatest-risks-6","status":"publish","type":"perspectives","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/tr\/perspectives\/remedying-our-planets-greatest-risks-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Gezegenimizin en b\u00fcy\u00fck risklerini ortadan kald\u0131rmak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Few forecasters would value \u2018wisdom of hindsight\u2019 more than those responsible for identifying and assessing risk. \u00a0As little as six months ago, the term <em>coronavirus<\/em> was known to hardly anyone outside scientific and medical circles. \u00a0The now-ubiquitous image of a spheroid virus with protruding protein spikes was yet to imprint itself on the global consciousness.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-69821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2020\/07\/RR-1-212x300.png\" alt=\"Global Risks Report 2020\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" \/>As a graphic demonstration of risk\u2019s elusive nature, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/\">World Economic Forum<\/a> (WEF) published its annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Global_Risk_Report_2020.pdf\">Global Risks Report<\/a> 2020, in January this year, there was little mention of pandemics \u2013 let alone COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>This was despite the fact the virus was already spreading from continent to continent and had been identified as a likely zoonotic (and highly contagious) disease within its original epicenter.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of previous virus scares around SARS in 2002 and MERS in 2012, the danger posed by pandemics and infectious diseases failed to make the list of the top ten global risks (in terms of likelihood to occur) identified by the WEF in January\u2019s report.\u00a0 Indeed, pandemics and infectious diseases have failed to rank among the WEF\u2019s top five risks for the past decade, despite experts in the field fearing an outbreak was potentially overdue.<\/p>\n<p>None of which is to criticize the WEF.\u00a0 On the contrary, the WEF could actually be hailed for its foresight, since its earlier Global Risks Report of 2019 included a special investigation into \u2018biological risks\u2019 a full 12 months before COVID-19 made itself known.<\/p>\n<p>Tellingly, its 2019 risk report noted that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">World Health Organization<\/a> (WHO) felt it prudent to include a \u2018Disease X\u2019 in its list of infections warranting most urgent research \u2013 an acknowledgment that future unknown pathogens are as dangerous as those already on our radar<\/li>\n<li>Countries remained gravely unprepared for pandemics, with most failing to meet minimum international standards for detecting and reporting public health threats, as per binding regulations dating back to 2007<a href=\"#_ftn1\" \n<br \/>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":14137,"menu_order":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-14272","perspectives","type-perspectives","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Gezegenimizin en b\u00fcy\u00fck risklerini ortadan kald\u0131rmak - Abdul Latif Jameel<\/title>\n<meta name=\"robots\" content=\"noindex, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large, max-video-preview:-1\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:locale\" content=\"tr_TR\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:type\" content=\"article\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:title\" content=\"Gezegenimizin en b\u00fcy\u00fck risklerini ortadan kald\u0131rmak - Abdul Latif Jameel\" \/>\n<meta property=\"og:description\" content=\"Few forecasters would value \u2018wisdom of hindsight\u2019 more than those responsible for identifying and assessing risk. \u00a0As little as six months ago, the term coronavirus was known to hardly anyone outside scientific and medical circles. \u00a0The now-ubiquitous image of a spheroid virus with protruding protein spikes was yet to imprint itself on the global consciousness.
