grown to become a significant player in the Turkish consumer finance sector . . .\u00a0\u00a0 and one of the fastest growing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-97100\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ALJ-Finans-logo-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"ALJ Finans logo\" width=\"282\" height=\"158\" \/>It has also earned a robust reputation as a leader in innovation in automotive financing, with revolutionary services, and some Turkish consumer finance market \u2018firsts\u2019, such as robotic process automation, decision support automation, customer e-care, KredimOL mobile app and e-contract, plus a number of prestigious industry awards.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Looking to continue this track record of success and drive the development of ALJ Finans over its next period of growth is Chief Executive, Bet\u00fcg\u00fcl Toker.\u00a0 We spoke to Bet\u00fcg\u00fcl about the current dynamics in the Turkish consumer finance market and her ambitious plans to lead ALJ Finans into the future.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/46C25qdwabo\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>When did you join ALJ Finans?<\/h2>\n<p>I joined the <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\">Abdul Latif Jameel<\/a> family in September 2021. \u00a0I am originally a retail banker. \u00a0I began with QNB Finansbank in 2000, as a management trainee, where I stayed for 8\u00bd years. \u00a0Then I moved to Akbank, which was number two in Turkey at the time. \u00a0I was there for four years, but my focus has always been on payments systems in retail or consumer banking. \u00a0When I first got involved, digital banking was not really a discreet area in Turkey. \u00a0It was simply seen as an alternative delivery channel, rather than a separate business line. \u00a0I developed a focus on product expansion, data analytics, CRM, third-party collaborations \u2013 all areas where I could see that digital technology had enormous potential.<\/p>\n<p>I was approached by Bank Audi Group, one of the biggest banking groups in the region, which was launching in Turkey as Odeabank, to head up the retail banking division. \u00a0It was a chance to build up that business from scratch. \u00a0I jumped at it and stayed for five years, again with a big focus on the technology side of things. \u00a0I was then approached by Aktif Bank, the biggest investment bank in Turkey, who asked me to help them establish their digital banking business, including payment systems, cards, the fintech environment in general. \u00a0It was from Aktif Bank that I came to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljfinans.com.tr\/\">ALJ Finans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What attracted you to the role at ALJ Finans?<\/h2>\n<p>I knew of ALJ Finans and had become increasingly aware of them during my time at Aktif Bank. \u00a0I knew Abdul Latif Jameel was a major global player and, although ALJ Finans is relatively small on the consumer finance side in Turkey, I could see they had big plans and were making a lot of investment to grow and expand the business, particularly on the digital side. \u00a0I saw there was a great opportunity to combine my leadership experience and my expertise in digital banking to help ALJ Finans achieve its bold ambitions. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>How is the Turkish consumer finance market changing?<\/h2>\n<p>Consumer finance and banking are split into two different sectors. \u00a0The banking sector is very well established and well regulated, with around 40 million active customers. \u00a0Consumer finance is a newer sector, but it has expanded rapidly and there is still a lot of room for further growth, particularly on the digital and fintech side. \u00a0It is very competitive. \u00a0Fintechs are focusing first on building their businesses. \u00a0Once they have a built a solid base, they are in a better position to apply for other financial licenses, like a consumer finance licence or payments licence.\u00a0 It used to be the other way round \u2013 get the licence first, build the business and then obtain additional licenses.<\/p>\n<p>In general, the big banks dominate in areas like general purpose loans and mortgages, but consumer finance providers have a strong presence in some markets, like automotive finance, where they account for around 35% of lending. \u00a0There is scope for this to be much higher, which is what I\u2019m aiming for at ALJ Finans.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the prospects for the consumer finance sector over the next three years?<\/h2>\n<p>I predict that the sector will grow significantly in the next three years as it enters new financing areas &#8211; cumulative growth of more than 50% over the next three years would not be a surprise. \u00a0Increasing vehicle prices will increase the demand for credit. \u00a0A possible decrease in interest rates will push demand in a similar direction. \u00a0We expect to see growth in non-automotive financing solutions for products such as consumer electronics and household goods, as well as an increase in the share of financing companies in total loan volumes. \u00a0These healthy dynamics are likely to see more players coming into the market, especially on the non-automotive financing side, so competition is likely to get tougher.<\/p>\n<h2>Do you expect the consumer finance sector in Turkey to continue to be dominated by automotive finance?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-97107 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/ALJ-Finans-brands-150x141.jpg\" alt=\"ALJ Finans brands\" width=\"150\" height=\"141\" \/>For the time being, yes. \u00a0But within five years I think the balance will start to change, with growth in general purpose loans. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Automotive finance is an easy option \u2013 every vehicle has a plate value. \u00a0If something goes wrong, there is a nice big asset to sell. It\u2019s not as clear cut in other \u00a0areas of finance. \u00a0I think that is changing though, and at ALJ Finans we aim to be part of that change. \u00a0I expect to see finance \u00a0becoming more common across a wider range of assets, from mobile phones to furniture and white goods. \u00a0That\u2019s one of the areas we are focusing on.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the fintech scene like in Turkey?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-97114\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/KredimOL-App-Logo-300x126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"126\" \/>Turkey has a very dynamic fintech scene. \u00a0There are about 250 fintech companies here. \u00a0Over 50 of them have \u00a0e-money or payment services licenses. \u00a0There is one decacorn (valued over US$ 10 bn), four unicorns, one IPO, plus 127 gaming start-ups that have attracted over US$ 680 million in venture capital.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97093\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2022\/03\/KredimOL-App-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"KredimOL App\" width=\"2560\" height=\"856\" \/> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s 250 fintechs, many of which already have or will be applying for e-money licenses. \u00a0So, what\u2019s the strategy? \u00a0E-money includes payments and cards, so it is a great way to get into customer\u2019s wallets, or rather, onto their smart phones. \u00a0Once you\u2019ve established yourself in that space, you can apply for more licenses, expand into other areas and you can attract more investment. \u00a0At some point they will need to decide whether to become fully fledged digital banks, something which the Turkish government is very supportive of. \u00a0It is a very exciting, fast-moving market.<\/p>\n<h2>What does the dynamism of the fintech market mean for providers like ALJ Finans?<\/h2>\n<p>I think it confirms that we are on the right path. \u00a0You have to <em>think digitally<\/em>, and you have to put customers at the very center of your digital universe.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t invest in your customer experience, you will have zero value.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is what we are already doing at ALJ Finans.\u00a0 We put our customers at the center, and we are building the technology around them to meet their needs.\u00a0\u00a0 We are updating our technology system, our lending platform, to enable us to create digital-first solutions and we are building up our internal technology team to enhance our innovation capabilities in future.<\/p>\n<h2>What are your plans for ALJ Finans over the next few years?<\/h2>\n<p>This year, 2022 will be a year of growth for us.\u00a0 We ended 2021, with a 64% increase in loans extended compared to the previous year.\u00a0 Our market share grew from 3.5% levels at the end of 2019 to 5% at the end of 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our goal here is to gain at least 2 more points in 2022.\u00a0 In 2021, we increased the volume of customers by 15%.\u00a0 This year, we want to increase this number by 25% and we expect our loan portfolio to grow by more than 50%.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, ALJ Finans is largely an automotive finance business.\u00a0 In three years, that will no longer be the case. \u00a0We will be providing a digital consumer finance platform that connects consumers to finance solutions across a wide range of sectors, including automotive, through one \u2018super app\u2019.\u00a0 To make this work, we will need to attract more consumers onto our platform.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be focusing on this over the next few years, building partnerships and using Big Data and AI to put intelligent systems in place to attract and retain consumers within our finance eco-system.<\/p>\n<p>Our aim is to be the best digital finance company in Turkey. \u00a0Today, we already provide end-to-end applications, and with instant approval, credit can be used at the relevant dealer. \u00a0Our goal now is to rewrite these processes and completely re-architect the application. \u00a0We aim to launch this innovation in September 2022. \u00a0We\u2019re aiming for 1 in 4 transactions to come from digital next year.<\/p>\n<h2>How do you expect the big players to respond to the changing market dynamic?<\/h2>\n<p>The big banks are already repositioning themselves in this space.\u00a0 They are moving away from being seen only as \u2018banks\u2019 and are trying to establish their own platforms to position themselves as providers of a much wider range of financial products.\u00a0 Some banks are doing it within their existing brand, others are establishing their own fintech companies.\u00a0 This will continue, and that\u2019s fine, the market is ready for these id=\"caption-attachment-97086\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ALJ Finans team<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>With the worst of the pandemic hopefully behind us, what are your expectations for 2022?<\/h2>\n<p>This year, we anticipate significant growth in the consumer finance sector in Turkey, driven both by the inflationary environment and increased activity in the automotive vehicle market.\u00a0 The emergence of new COVID-19 variants may continue to create some uncertainties from time to time, but we predict that the effects of the pandemic will decrease somewhat in 2022. \u00a0Starting from the middle of the year, we expect that global inflation concerns will decrease, and we will begin to take steps towards normalization.<\/p>\n<p>My priority for ALJ Finans is also growth. \u00a0Growth in terms of customer numbers and in terms of our investment into the customer experience.\u00a0 We could continue as we are and still be a very successful business, but our ambitions are much bigger than that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That means investing in technology, data, analytics, AI\u2026every aspect of our digital platform.\u00a0 That will be the focus until the end of 2023.\u00a0\u00a0 My other priority is to obtain an e-money license.\u00a0 \u00a0We are currently a financial services business, but it isn\u2019t enough if we want to achieve our growth ambitions.\u00a0 An e-money license will enable us to provide things like money transfer, debit cards, payments, consumer credit.\u00a0 It will give us a much bigger space in the customer\u2019s wallet, and much more opportunity to achieve our strategic objectives.\u00a0 Originalmente vengo de la banca minorista. Comenc\u00e9 en el a\u00f1o 2000 con unas pr\u00e1cticas de administraci\u00f3n en QNB Finansbank, donde estuve 8\u00a0a\u00f1os y medio. Luego me fui a Akbank, que en ese momento era el n\u00famero dos en Turqu\u00eda. Era una oportunidad estupenda para construir un negocio desde cero. No me lo pens\u00e9 y ocup\u00e9 este puesto durante cinco a\u00f1os, de nuevo muy centrada en el lado tecnol\u00f3gico. A continuaci\u00f3n, Aktif Bank, el mayor banco de inversi\u00f3n de Turqu\u00eda, me pidi\u00f3 que les ayudara a establecer su negocio de banca digital, incluidos los sistemas de pago, las tarjetas y el entorno de la tecnolog\u00eda financiera en general. Sab\u00eda que Abdul Latif Jameel era un actor global importante y, aunque ALJ Finans es relativamente peque\u00f1o en el \u00e1mbito de la financiaci\u00f3n al consumo en Turqu\u00eda, pude ver que ten\u00edan grandes planes y que estaban haciendo una gran inversi\u00f3n para crecer y expandir el negocio, especialmente en el \u00e1mbito digital. Me di cuenta de que se trataba de una excelente oportunidad, puesto que pod\u00eda combinar mi experiencia de liderazgo y banca digital para ayudar a ALJ Finans a lograr sus ambiciones.<\/p>\r\n<h2>\u00bfC\u00f3mo est\u00e1 cambiando el mercado de la financiaci\u00f3n al consumo en Turqu\u00eda?<\/h2>\r\n<p>La financiaci\u00f3n y la banca de consumo se dividen en dos sectores diferentes. El sector bancario est\u00e1 muy bien establecido y regulado, con alrededor de 40\u00a0millones de clientes activos. La financiaci\u00f3n al consumo es un sector m\u00e1s nuevo, pero se ha expandido r\u00e1pidamente y todav\u00eda tiene mucho margen de crecimiento, especialmente en el \u00e1mbito digital y de la tecnolog\u00eda financiera. Es muy competitivo. Las empresas de fintech se est\u00e1n centrando primero en construir sus negocios. Una vez hayan construido una base s\u00f3lida, estar\u00e1n en una mejor posici\u00f3n para solicitar otras licencias financieras, como de financiaci\u00f3n al consumo o de pagos. Aqu\u00ed hay unas 250\u00a0empresas de fintech. M\u00e1s de 50\u00a0con licencias de dinero electr\u00f3nico o servicios de pago. Hay que <em>pensar en t\u00e9rminos digitales<\/em> y poner a los clientes en el centro del universo digital. Para generar valor es imprescindible invertir en experiencia del cliente.<\/p>\r\n<p>En ALJ Finans ya lo estamos haciendo. Ponemos a nuestros clientes en el centro y construimos la tecnolog\u00eda a su alrededor para satisfacer sus necesidades. Estamos actualizando nuestro sistema tecnol\u00f3gico, nuestra plataforma de pr\u00e9stamos, para poder crear soluciones digitales y estamos formando nuestro propio equipo tecnol\u00f3gico interno para mejorar nuestras capacidades de innovaci\u00f3n en el futuro.<\/p>\r\n<h2>\u00bfCu\u00e1les son sus planes para ALJ Finans en los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Para nosotros, el 2022 ser\u00e1 un a\u00f1o de crecimiento. Terminamos 2021 con un aumento en los pr\u00e9stamos del 64\u00a0% en comparaci\u00f3n con el a\u00f1o anterior. Nuestra cuota de mercado creci\u00f3 del 3,5\u00a0% a finales de 2019 al 5\u00a0% a finales de 2021.<\/p>\r\n<p>Nuestro objetivo es ganar al menos 2 puntos m\u00e1s en 2022. Algunos bancos lo est\u00e1n haciendo dentro de su marca actual, otros est\u00e1n estableciendo sus propias empresas de fintech.
