{"id":8665,"date":"2023-03-23T09:51:44","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T09:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/quick-reads\/almar-water-solutions-ceo-moderates-united-nations-general-assembly-water-conference-side-event\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T08:49:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:49:36","slug":"almar-water-solutions-ceo-moderates-united-nations-general-assembly-water-conference-side-event","status":"publish","type":"quickreads","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/en\/quick-reads\/almar-water-solutions-ceo-moderates-united-nations-general-assembly-water-conference-side-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Almar Water Solutions CEO moderates United Nations General Assembly water conference side event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/carlos-cosin\/\">Carlos Cos\u00edn<\/a>, CEO, <a href=\"https:\/\/almarwater.com\/\">Almar Water Solutions<\/a> and Former President, International Desalination Association (IDA) has successfully moderated the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ga\/\">United Nations General Assembly<\/a> Water Conference Side Event: Incorporating Non-Conventional Water Resources into Integrated Water Resources Management.&nbsp; The event was organized by the IDA and the Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge and took place at the Instituto Cervantes in New York, USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion included key messages for stepping up the role of non-conventional resources as crucial assets for achieving water security and to impulse research, capacity building, and implementation initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his opening remarks, Carlos said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWater scarcity, amplified by climate change, is recognized as a critical challenge to sustainable development and a cause of social unrest.&nbsp; It was only in June 2020 that the United Nations recognized using non-conventional water resources as an opportunity and solution to address the global water crisis, stating that \u201cconsidering the water-related sustainable development challenges in arid regions, utilizing nonconventional water resources is an emerging opportunity to narrow the water demand-supply gap.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/UNGA-1024x555.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107061\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>This event was co-convened by multiple partners including Hon. Teresa Ribera, Third Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge of the Government of Spain, while the panel of distinguished speakers included: <strong>Mr. Hugo Moran<\/strong>,&nbsp;Secretary of State for the Environment, Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Spain; <strong>Prof. Rasha Elkholy,<\/strong>,&nbsp;Chair of the National Water Research Center, Egypt; <strong>H.E. Jessica Lopez<\/strong>,&nbsp;Minister of Public Works, Republic of Chile; <strong>Mr. Gustavo Saltiel<\/strong>,&nbsp;Water and Sanitation Lead, World Bank Group, Global Water Practice, USA; <strong>Mr. \u00c9ric Tardieu<\/strong>,&nbsp;Vice-President of the World Water Council, France; and <strong>Mrs. Barbara Pompili<\/strong>,&nbsp;Chair of the Water Governance Initiative, OECD, France.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Carlos-Cosin-UNGA-scaled-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107047\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlos added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cCreating new water sources through desalination and reuse is a natural and viable alternative for conserving scarce water resources and thus protecting our environment. Many multilateral organizations agree that non-conventional water sources can provide high-quality drinking water and water for industrial and agricultural needs, thus enabling economic and social development and avoiding water
