{"id":8513,"date":"2021-11-07T13:02:46","date_gmt":"2021-11-07T13:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/quick-reads\/sabeel-fountains-an-art-jameel-open-call-design-contest-unveiled-across-expo-2020-site\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T08:48:36","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:48:36","slug":"sabeel-fountains-an-art-jameel-open-call-design-contest-unveiled-across-expo-2020-site","status":"publish","type":"quickreads","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/en\/quick-reads\/sabeel-fountains-an-art-jameel-open-call-design-contest-unveiled-across-expo-2020-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Sabeel Fountains, an Art Jameel open call design contest, unveiled across Expo 2020 site"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Sabeel Fountains, a series of almost 40 drinking fountains designed to both refresh and wow visitors to the world\u2019s biggest cultural gather can now be found across the public spaces of the Expo 2020 site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/11\/211003_EXPO_ECS_SABEEL_ONLINE_SUBS_6_small.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/SS1_5588-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Art Jameel Expo 2020 Sabeel Fountains\" class=\"wp-image-93964\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expo2020dubai.com\/\">Expo 2020<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/\">Art Jameel<\/a> began in September 2019 with the Sabeel 2020 open call \u2013 a design contest which received more than 100 proposals.&nbsp; An internationally renowned jury selected and awarded two design collaboratives \u2013 UAE-based creative studio Architecture + Other Things, and design team Faissal El-Malak and Alia Bin Omair.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/SS1_4576-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"Art Jameel Expo 2020 Sabeel Fountains\" class=\"wp-image-93957\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>One fountain is designed to resemble a beautiful letterbox, complete with an embossed letter by its artist, while another features a mini \u2018natural world\u2019.&nbsp; All the Sabeel Fountains are contemporary artistic interpretations of the traditional Emirati drinking fountain \u2013 sabeel \u2013 and reflect the country\u2019s heritage and its spirit of hospitality, tolerance, and generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winning designs \u2013 <em>Water in the Green<\/em> by Architecture + Other Things, and <em>Nahel<\/em>, by Faissal El-Malak and Alia Bin Omair, are collectively known as Signature Fountains, with 37 located throughout the public spaces of Expo 2020.&nbsp; <em>Water in the Green<\/em> combines robust materials with plants that highlight Expo 2020\u2019s aim to be the most sustainable World Expo in history, while <em>Nahel<\/em> features motifs of humankind, nature and technology connecting in harmony, illustrating Expo\u2019s subthemes of Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ae.linkedin.com\/in\/marjan-faraidooni-82408111\">Marjan Faraidooni<\/a>, Chief Experience Officer at Expo 2020 Dubai,<\/strong> said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThrough these beautiful and innovatively designed drinking fountains, we invite visitors to take a moment to pause as they quench their thirst and consider their own connection to this most precious resource. The Sabeel Fountains also offer an unmissable opportunity for the public to discover UAE and regional design talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sabeel Fountains invite millions of visitors to discover the centuries-old tradition of how, through public drinking fountains, Emiratis share their water with people in need.
