{"id":8352,"date":"2020-10-18T08:56:20","date_gmt":"2020-10-18T08:56:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/quick-reads\/water-desalination-milestones\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T08:47:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:47:25","slug":"water-desalination-milestones","status":"publish","type":"quickreads","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/en\/quick-reads\/water-desalination-milestones\/","title":{"rendered":"Water desalination milestones and new challenges to come"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In his latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/desalination-reuse-goals-achieved-new-challenges-carlos-cos%C3%ADn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LinkedIn article<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/carloscosin\/\">Carlos Cosin<\/a>, CEO of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almarwater.com\">Almar Water Solutions<\/a>, the dedicated&nbsp;water solutions unit at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">Abdul Latif Jameel Energy<\/a>, outlines the significant milestones achieved to date in non-conventional water sources such as desalination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than 21,000 desalination plants now located around the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">renewable energy<\/a> sources such as solar, wind, geothermal and nuclear energy have proven to be viable competitive solutions.&nbsp; The increase in global water demand is expected to continue at a similar rate until 2050, 20 to 30% higher than the current level of water use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carlos writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;2019 was the year with the highest number of seawater desalination projects contracted due to the awarding of several mega-contracts, and the market is expected to remain strong despite COVID-19. The desalination market is currently dominated by a small number of projects in the Gulf and the Middle East, with capacities of more than 300,000 m3\/day. This indicates that the water sector has remained resilient despite the circumstances, although it is true that the industrial market has been affected to a greater extent.
