In the lab, the research team subjected <em>halicin<\/em> to dozens of bacterial strains, including some that are notoriously resistant to antibiotics such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff), Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii), and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb).&nbsp;In the petri dish test, <em>halicin <\/em>eradicated all the bacterial species tested, aside from one difficult lung pathogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/halicin-antibiotics-300x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57741\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The revolutionary computer model used to uncover <em>halicin<\/em> is specifically designed to identify potential antibiotics that kill bacteria using <em>alternative<\/em> techniques to those of existing drugs. With traditional methods for screening new antibiotics often prohibitively costly and laborious, the efficacy of this specially developed algorithm, which can screen more than a hundred million chemical compounds in a matter of days, has the potential to make a profound impact on the landscape of global healthcare in future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-Clinic was founded in 2018 as a collaboration between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/\" data-hovercard=\"\/ajax\/hovercard\/page.php?id=144512995604189&amp;extragetparams=%7B%22__tn__%22%3A%22%2CdK%2AF-R%22%2C%22eid%22%3A%22ARAhqgzkbfQDegYBPcXPl-Lr3W0Ud2rraQY8glzggGDqOKICvojCbSMW6H7pIygs3X0lFHThVUC5OaNQ%22%2C%22directed_target_id%22%3Anull%2C%22groups_location%22%3Anull%7D\" data-hovercard-prefer-more-content-show=\"1\">Community Jameel&nbsp;<\/a>and MIT, with the aim to revolutionize disease prevention, detection, and treatment through the development and utilization of AI technologies.
