{"id":7334,"date":"2018-08-12T09:33:07","date_gmt":"2018-08-12T09:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/quick-reads\/j-pal-japanese-partnership-aims-enhance-education-africa\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T08:39:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T08:39:47","slug":"j-pal-japanese-partnership-aims-enhance-education-africa","status":"publish","type":"quickreads","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/en\/quick-reads\/j-pal-japanese-partnership-aims-enhance-education-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"J-PAL Japanese partnership aims to enhance education in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/\">J-PAL<\/a>) has signed a cooperation agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jica.go.jp\/english\/\">JICA<\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pratham.org\/\">Pratham<\/a>, a global education charity, to enhance education in parts of Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cooperation agreement was signed at a public forum on health and education in Tokyo in June, co-hosted by the three organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centerpiece event, held at JICA headquarters, was an opportunity for attendees from Japanese academic institutions and government agencies to learn about J-PAL and Pratham\u2019s recent research, particularly in the education sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-PAL and Pratham also convened a series of private meetings and workshops with the JICA leadership and education and health sector teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the new collaboration, the organizations will work to expand the \u2018Teaching at the Right Level\u2019 (TaRL) program for school education in Africa, following a successful scale-up of the program in Zambia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TaRL is a pedagogical approach that involves evaluating children using a simple assessment tool and then grouping them according to learning level rather than age or grade.&nbsp;It was pioneered by Pratham in India and its effectiveness has been evaluated and enhanced in collaboration with J-PAL\u2019s rigorous scientific approach.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Fady-M-Jameel-1054-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Fady M Jameel\" class=\"wp-image-14923\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cJ-PAL\u2019s pioneering education research with Pratham in India, the \u2018Teaching at the Right Level\u2019 program and now its scale-up in Zambia, are helping to improve learning outcomes for millions of children around the world,\u201d<\/em> said <a href=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/fady-jameel\/\">Fady Jameel<\/a>, President of Community Jameel International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThrough cooperation with JICA, with its outstanding record of development work in Africa and beyond, the impact of J-PAL\u2019s research and Pratham\u2019s education work is set to achieve an impact at an even greater scale.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>J-PAL has a track-record of leveraging insights gained from its research to support policymaking around the world, including in the Middle East, where J-PAL has active and completed research projects and local partnerships to support policymaking in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, J-PAL affiliated researchers have conducted more than 860 evaluations in 80 countries, and more than 300 million people have been reached by programs tested and found to be effective through J-PAL evaluations.
