{"id":13409,"date":"2019-05-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-26T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/perspectives\/securing-africas-food-supplies-j-wafs-funding-changing-future-fertilizers-africa\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T07:06:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T07:06:56","slug":"securing-africas-food-supplies-j-wafs-funding-changing-future-fertilizers-africa","status":"publish","type":"perspectives","link":"https:\/\/cms.alj3.clients.lemonhq.io\/en\/perspectives\/securing-africas-food-supplies-j-wafs-funding-changing-future-fertilizers-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Securing Africa\u2019s food supplies:\u00a0 How J-WAFS funding is changing the future of fertilizers in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/ar\/openingdoors\/en\/issue\/autumn-2017\/j-wafs-action-rocks-crops-delivering-affordable-potassium-fertilizer-across-africa\/\">research project<\/a> supported by a <a href=\"http:\/\/jwafs.mit.edu\/\">J-WAFS<\/a> Seed Grant in 2017, is making significant progress in understanding the approaches needed to generate potash-independent fertilizers suitable for African soils \u2013 a key step in the battle to sustainably meet future food demands across the continent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmse.mit.edu\/faculty\/profile\/allanore\">Antoine Allanore,<\/a> Associate Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at <a href=\"http:\/\/mit.edu\/\">MIT<\/a>, (pictured above) has spent the last six years attempting to find alternative fertilizer materials that are more suitable to southern-hemisphere environments. \u00a0Traditional potassium solutions are mainly generated in Canada, Russia and Belarus, and are both expensive to transport and less effective in fulfilling the soil nutrient needs of southern hemisphere soils.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 J-WAFS funding allowed Prof. Allanore and his research partner <a href=\"http:\/\/ciceri.mit.edu\/\">Davide Ciceri<\/a> to assess the fertilizing potential of new materials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21147 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tomato.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"357\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Their testing started on tomatoes, one of the world\u2019s most consumed vegetables, after a partnership with Professor Allen Barker at the University of Massachusetts Amherst secured greenhouse space and agronomy expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Allanore admits:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat was an extremely important step for our research. \u00a0The J-WAFS funding gave us the freedom to enter into this collaboration with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. \u00a0And, unlike what happens with corporate sponsorship research agreements, in this case we all had open access to the data.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_21148\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21148\" class=\"wp-image-21148 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Davide-Ciceri.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">MIT postdoc Davide Ciceri holds a microfluidic device he designed to study leaching of potassium from the silicate mineral potassium feldspar. Photo Credit: Denis Paiste\/Materials Processing Center<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>After many years of work, Prof. Allanore and Dr. Ciceri, have recently seen their findings published in the <em>Science of the Total Environment<\/em> journal. \u00a0Their paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969718331188\">Local fertilizers to achieve food self-sufficiency in Africa<\/a>\u201d, details their recommended future research directions for material scientists looking to develop a \u201cnew generation of local and affordable fertilizers\u201d for Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Allanore said: <em>\u201cUnfortunately, farming is not a very profitable field.\u00a0 They make so little compared to those who work in trade or food processing and marketing, which, as a result, have received a lot of investment and attention.\u00a0 Because of this lack of research investment, we know very little about what happens to some of the elements that we\u2019re putting in the soil.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21149\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21149\" class=\"wp-image-21149 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/High-pure-white-potash-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21149\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">High pure white potash awaits packaging and sale for use in soluble fertilizer and in industrial markets. <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/ar\/openingdoors\/en\/issue\/autumn-2017\/j-wafs-action-rocks-crops-delivering-affordable-potassium-fertilizer-across-africa\/\">research project<\/a> supported by a <a href=\"http:\/\/jwafs.mit.edu\/\">J-WAFS<\/a> Seed Grant in 2017, is making significant progress in understanding the approaches needed to generate potash-independent fertilizers suitable for African soils \u2013 a key step in the battle to sustainably meet future food demands across the continent.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmse.mit.edu\/faculty\/profile\/allanore\">Antoine Allanore,<\/a> Associate Professor of Metallurgy in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at <a href=\"http:\/\/mit.edu\/\">MIT<\/a>, (pictured above) has spent the last six years attempting to find alternative fertilizer materials that are more suitable to southern-hemisphere environments. \u00a0Traditional potassium solutions are mainly generated in Canada, Russia and Belarus, and are both expensive to transport and less effective in fulfilling the soil nutrient needs of southern hemisphere soils.<\/p>\r\n<p>The 2017 J-WAFS funding allowed Prof. Allanore and his research partner <a href=\"http:\/\/ciceri.mit.edu\/\">Davide Ciceri<\/a> to assess the fertilizing potential of new materials.<\/p>\r\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter wp-image-21147 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tomato.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"357\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Their testing started on tomatoes, one of the world\u2019s most consumed vegetables, after a partnership with Professor Allen Barker at the University of Massachusetts Amherst secured greenhouse space and agronomy expertise.<\/p>\r\n<p>Prof. Allanore admits:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\u201cThat was an extremely important step for our research. \u00a0The J-WAFS funding gave us the freedom to enter into this collaboration with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. \u00a0And, unlike what happens with corporate sponsorship research agreements, in this case we all had open access to the data.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n[caption Photo Credit: Denis Paiste\/Materials Processing Center<\/span>[\/caption]\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>After many years of work, Prof. Allanore and Dr. Ciceri, have recently seen their findings published in the <em>Science of the Total Environment<\/em> journal. \u00a0Their paper, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0048969718331188\">Local fertilizers to achieve food self-sufficiency in Africa<\/a>\u201d, details their recommended future research directions for material scientists looking to develop a \u201cnew generation of local and affordable fertilizers\u201d for Africa.<\/p>\r\n<p>Prof. Allanore said: <em>\u201cUnfortunately, farming is not a very profitable field.\u00a0 They make so little compared to those who work in trade or food processing and marketing, which, as a result, have received a lot of investment and attention.\u00a0 Because of this lack of research investment, we know very little about what happens to some of the elements that we\u2019re putting in the soil.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n[caption id=\"attachment_21149\" align=\"alignleft\" width=\"300\"]<img class=\"wp-image-21149 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/04\/High-pure-white-potash-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/> <span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">High pure white potash awaits packaging and sale for use in soluble fertilizer and in industrial markets.
